If you were handed a novel that describes someone being carried downriver “while grasping the back of a gigantic anaconda ‘as thick as a small cow and easily well over twenty-five feet long,’ ” would you believe that writer? Probably not. Fiction that’s too outlandish feels false, but nonfiction should be verifiable. That description, by the way, appears in Mother of God: An Extraordinary Journey into the Uncharted Tributaries of the Western Amazon, one of the books in this week’s list of thoughtfully written tales you might be startled to know are true. Time with Elephants
It is an incredibly distressing thing to want to help an emergency that you cannot see, cannot hear, and that is thousands of miles away. If it were not for the internet, and the occasional magazine article we would have no concept of what is happening to the natural world right now. We'd have no idea how fast rhinos and elephants are being exterminated from Africa. Even as I work with everything I have to try and protect a part of the Amazon - the sand is draining from the glass on so many other stories.

This one is going down in Brooklyn's DUMBO area (Down.Under.theManhattan.Bridge.Overpass). Powerhouse Arena is Brooklyn's 'laboratory for creative thought', where performances and exhibitions and book events of all kinds take place. On Tuesday March 25th I'll be there in-conversation with my editor Michael Signorelli talking about the creation of Mother of God with questions food, drinks, and photos after. Don't miss it!
